In the second publication of our “INSPIRES in Action” series, we present the project “Through the Gates of the Northwest. Discover, Explore and Taste”, implemented by Veselite Vinari Ltd. – The Jolly Vintners, together with Defileto Ltd. and BM Vision Ltd., with €25,000 in financial support from the INSPIRES project.
The challenge
The project explores how the natural and cultural sites along the Lyutibrod–Cherepish route can be connected through a coherent visitor experience combining digital interpretation, outdoor activities and accessible educational content about the area.
What was implemented?
Through the project, the partnership introduced:
- an interactive digital kiosk in Lyutibrod with information about the area’s geography, biodiversity, history, legends, traditions and nearby attractions;
- QR-coded information points providing access to digital stories about local natural and cultural heritage;
- a VR tourism experience presenting the landscapes, activities and sites along the Lyutibrod–Cherepish route;
- educational eco-rafting tours on the Iskar River, combining adventure with information about river ecosystems, biodiversity and responsible behaviour in nature;
- specialised bird-observation cameras as an additional educational resource.
The educational game “Mission Iskar” was also prepared for possible use during future eco-rafting tours.
Why is the experience relevant to others?
The project demonstrates how small rural tourism businesses can combine digital tools with existing outdoor activities to connect dispersed attractions and make local natural and cultural heritage easier to discover. Its approach could be adapted by other rural and nature-based destinations.
Explore the project’s digital stories:
- Lyutibrod and the medieval settlement of Koritengrad near the Ritlite rock formations
- The local votive tradition and communal tables in Lyutibrod
- Cherepish Monastery
